Humidity Control Systems
Humidity control systems can be a large help in maintaining a stable environment for your piano. The humidity in your home will vary with the seasons. The average humidity level will depend on your particular home, but it can range from 5-10% in the winter to 75-90% in the summer. Most humidity control systems will keep the relative humidity in and around a piano between 40% and 50%. This has been determined to be the optimal humidity range for maintaining long-term piano stability. Humidity control systems can be a bit of an up-front investment, however in the long term they will help prevent cracks or warping in the piano, especially the bridges, pin block and soundboard – which are all major structural components (and are quite costly to replace). A humidity control system will also assist in maintaining intonation for longer periods of time.
